Cleveland Browns president Mike Holmgren made it known that he will let running back Peyton Hillis test the open market, when he becomes a free agent this coming offseason.
“I don’t think anybody pushed anybody against the wall on contract talks and said ‘we’re done,’ but right now, it’s kind of quiet,” said Holmgren. “Let’s let Peyton play, let the dust settle and see what happens.”
Holmgren has indicated that the Browns will attempt to sign Hillis as he test’s the market.
“Because of the nature of these types of negotiations, and if Peyton has a good year, he’ll have opportunities now because you’ll enter in free agency — legitimate free agency,” said Holmgren. “Are we going to be a player in there to try and keep him here? Absolutely. Absolutely. I told him that yesterday.”
Talks between the Browns and Hillis aren’t completely cut off at this point, but rather in a holding pattern.
I really believe the Browns need to do what they can to sign hillis. Let’s be honest, he’s the back bone of their offense, without him they don’t have an identity.
