Washington plows through the Chargers in overtime to win 30-24

The Washington Redskins narrowly defeated the San Diego Chargers in overtime 30-24.

After the Chargers were forced to punt on their opening drive, Washington went 92 yards after punter Mike Scifres (with the help of Seyi Ajiritutu) pinned the team on the 1-yard line. Chargers linebacker Lawrence Guy kept them scoreless however when he blocked Washington’s field goal attempt. It was the first block for the Chargers since 2002.

The game’s first score came when Robert Griffin’s pass was tipped in the air by Lawence Guy and caught by Sean Lissemore in the end zone for a touchdown.

Chargers’ defense set a team record today after the first quarter. The defense has not let opposing teams score a touchdown in 12 quarters. That ended midway through the second quarter after Washington capitalized on a Philp Rivers interception by taking four plays to run it in for a touchdown to tie the game.

The Chargers responded with a 15-yard touch to Eddie Royal to go up by 7 at the end of the half.

Washington would then go on to score 14 unanswered points to go up by 10 in the fourth quarter.

The Chargers fought back to get within 3 with another Rivers touchdown. This time it was to rookie Keenan Allen who continues to show teams that they made a mistake letting him fall to the third round.

That series was followed by a quick 3 and out for Washington and the Chargers got the ball back with a little over two minutes left. Danny Woodhead almost got the touchdown that would have put the Chargers up 27-24 with less than 20 seconds left. Instead the Chargers got the ball on the half yard line. A couple of questionable play calls by the Chargers led to a field goal which tied the game up and sent the game to overtime.

Overtime showed why the Chargers’ best defense is their offense. Rivers never touched the ball in overtime as the Redskins plowed through the Chargers’ defense and ran it in for their third touchdown of the day and ended the game.

The Chargers will now get ready to face a tough match up next week against a Broncos team coming off a bye.
