The Vikings announced that Matt Cassel will get the start at quarterback this week as Christian Ponder sits out after breaking his ribs last week.
No one had any idea how serious Ponder’s injury was until today. He ended up telling TwinCities.com that he doesn’t have any issues with the throwing the football, but there are some concerns with his rib protruding into his heart if he ends up getting hit during a game.
“Early in the week, it wasn’t looking good. Then things got better,” Ponder said after missing practice Friday. “I practiced (Thursday) a lot more than I thought I was going to. I think I would have been able to play. Throwing felt fine. I guess the biggest risk was the health issue.”
“They were worried about the placement where the rib is to my heart,” he continued. “So we made the decision based on what’s best for me and my health and for this team. It stinks, but it is what it is and I’ll be back in for Carolina.”
Cassel will have a chance now to prove that he can still be a starting NFL quarterback after being dumped by the Chiefs this past offseason.
Ponder on the other hand needs to make sure hie rib heals without any problems.
