According to Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News, the deadline for Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz to sign a new contract is June 17th. If he doesn’t sign by then, he’ll be forced to play under his restricted free agent tender for the 2013 season. Both sides would then be forced to work on an extension after the season.
As for Cruz, the reality is big contracts rarely get done until there’s a deadline — such as June 17 when the Giants can reduce Cruz’s tender offer from $2.879 million to $630,000. There remains optimism on both sides that a deal will eventually be reached, and it’s a pretty good bet that he’ll either have a new contract or sign his tender by then.
If Cruz doesn’t sign his RFA tender by the 17th, then the Giants will have the option to dramatically decrease the $2 million he’s slated to make as a RFA.
Vacchiano is right, the NFL is a business where things get done at the last-minute and Cruz’s situation isn’t any different.
