Earlier today, linebacker Jonathan Vilma restructured his contract with the Saints, although financial details were not disclosed. A few hours later, the Saints struck a new multi-year deal with cornerback Jabari Greer, which just happened to augment the Saints’ cap space for the current season.
Meanwhile, Drew Brees’ contract remains unfinished, although John Clayton said earlier this week that Brees and the Saints’ management were only apart by $2 million per year. It seems fairly obvious at this point that the cap space created by the Vilma and Greer contracts is designed to allow Brees and the Saints to finally seal the deal. Which means, of course, that Brees is getting the contract he wanted or at least something very close to it.
