LaDainian Tomlison on Ryan Mathews: “He needs to buckle down”

Running back Ryan Mathews was selected 12th overall by the San Diego Chargers who had to trade up to draft him in 2010. In many peoples’ eyes, Mathews is seen as a bust considering the spot he was drafted at. Former Charger and future Hall of Famer LaDainian Tomlinson says all Mathews has to do is study more.

Tomlinson said this about Ryan Mathews via Kevin Acee of the U-T San Diego.

Ryan needs to buckle himself down in the classroom and learn a lot more about pass blocking and running routes out the backfield.

Mathews acknowledged as much on the first day of training camp.

I made that a main focus of just trying to get as much knowledge in my head,” he said, “trying to run on offense as much as I can, and (learn) defenses and everything I can.

A lot has been said about Mathews’ lack of study habits. It seems like he never learned how to pass protect which makes him a liability on passing plays. Look no further than that if you want to know why the team signed Danny Woodhead.

Ryan Mathews has two years left on his rookie contract. If he underwhelms this year again however, look for the Chargers to cut him at the end of the season.
