Carolina Panthers wide receiver Steve Smith told the media on Wednesday that he should have kept his conversation with quarterback Cam Newton private.
“I shouldn’t have said anything,” Smith said, clarifying later that he meant he shouldn’t have said anything to the media, not to Newton, per Scott Fowler of the Charlotte Observer. “So that really falls on me. Hey, sometimes when you try to help, you do more harm than good.”
Smith made it clear that he and Newton are fine.
“We’re good,” Smith said. “Hey, I look at him as a big little brother. You’re going to fight. You’re going to spat. But you’ll always be able to come back to it.”
Now Smith and Newton will be forced to band together to try and bounce back this week against the Falcons.
