Sporting News erroneously lists Jonathan Stewart as having cancer

Imagine you’re Carolina Panthers running back Jonathan Stewart, chilling at home as you convalesce following ankle surgery when you happen upon a tweet from a fan who says he’s praying for your recovery. Sure you think nothing of it until you scan the image uploaded along with the well-wisher’s tweet and realize that the reason the fan is praying for you is that he thinks you have cancer, because that’s what the Sporting News had Stewart listed as on the Panthers injury report.

Talk about awkward.

Stewart, who obviously does not have cancer, quickly tweeted back to the fan in question, @DaveyJE24, that the Sporting News’ report was an outright lie, then followed that up with a tweet of his own reassuring his fans (and potential fantasy football owners) that he was indeed cancer free.

Here’s the Twitter exchange…

And here’s a better view of the Sporting News’ erroneous injury report…

And here’s Stewart’s clarification…

That’s one hell of a typo if you ask me, but to their credit the Sporting News has since corrected their mistake and are looking into why someone on their staff would list the Panthers back as having cancer. According to The Big Lead several of the News’ staff are blaming computer error, which makes more sense than my theory that someone at SN sabotaged the Panthers’ injury report in order to get Stewart as a late round steal in the office fantasy draft.
