ESPN’s Adam Schefter believes if Christian Ponder struggles this season, the Minnesota Vikings may not hesitate to bench him in favor of Matt Cassel.
He has to show that he is growing as a quarterback, getting better on a season-to-season basis, that there’s a reason for the Vikings to believe in him. I’m not sure he has to get the Minnesota to the playoffs again this season, but he does have to play well. If he struggles, my sense is the Vikings wouldn’t hesitate to go to Matt Cassel. There are people around the league who believe Cassel is underrated — despite what many Chiefs fans might think — and that if given the opportunity, he would fare well in Minnesota. It’s Ponder’s job, and it’s his to lose. But keep an eye on Cassel.
I’m one of those people who is a believer in Cassel. I believe the right team can win games with him under center.
