According to Jason Cole of Yahoo Sports, the New Orleans Saints and quarterback Drew Brees remain about $5 million apart from finalizing a new multi-year deal.
If the Saints aren’t able to get a deal done with Brees before March 5th, they’ll have to use their franchise tag on Brees, in order to keep him from hitting the open market.
If the Saints franchise Brees, they won’t be able to use their tag on either wide receiver Marques Colston or guard Carl Nicks. In that case Nicks and Colston would become free agents and could easily leave New Orleans and sign with another team.
The Saints would be able to deal with the loss of Colston,, but to lose a premiere offensive lineman like Nicks would be detrimental for them.
