The competition for the starting quarterback job of the New York Jets has hardly been a thrilling duel thus far, to say the least. Even though he has had a couple of ugly interceptions in the preseason, Mark Sanchez still looks to be in the lead over Geno Smith, who has only played a fraction of one preseason game before being injured.
And even though Philadelphia and Jacksonville have named their starters already, Rex Ryan is content to let his quarterback quandary play out a little more.
“We’re not comfortable making that decision right now. We want to have a thorough evaluation of our quarterbacks before we make that decision,” Ryan maintains.
Ryan already knows what he has in Sanchez. And even though Smith has only played limitedly, Ryan should be able to tell which quarterback will help the Jets win more games this year, a year which many say is make-or-break for Ryan. Delaying the decision too long could end up taking away valuable reps from the eventual starter.
So Ryan should make a decision before it’s too late. But many think it already might be.
