Rex Ryan says Mark Sanchez will have to compete

New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan made it clear today that quarterback Mark Sanchez will have to compete if he wants to be the starter next season.

“No. 1, you heard about what John talked about, the competition. Bringing in competition at every position, not just the quarterback position,” said Ryan, per NFL.com.  “That is what we want to do. So to say Mark Sanchez or this quarterback or that quarterback, I think there’s clearly going to be competition.”

Ryan still believes Sanchez can improve.

“I always think a young player can improve,” he said. “I don’t think there is any doubt. I think if you look at Mark, what is he, 25, 26 years old, in the life of a quarterback, I don’t believe that’s over the hill by any stretch.”

Even though Ryan says Sanchez will have to compete, who’s he going to compete against, Greg McElroy?  They need to bring in someone else to push him that’s not named Tim Tebow.

I’m also really not sure if Sanchez can get any better after regressing over the past few years.  I think a change of scenery would really help him.
