According to Mark Maske ofThe Washington Post, the Redskins are “intent” on signing linebacker Brian Orakpo to a contract extension.
The Washington Redskins are intent upon extending the contract of linebacker Brian Orakpo, according to a person with knowledge of the team’s plans.
The Redskins view Orakpo as one of their key defensive players.
That person, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the matter publicly, said Redskins officials consider Orakpo a key factor in the team’s defensive success and they’re hopeful of striking a deal well before Orakpo would be eligible for free agency next offseason.
No one knows if both sides have started to work on a new deal.
It is unclear, however, if the two sides are in active negotiations about a new deal as the Redskins prepare to open training camp this week in Richmond.
Orakpo is a heck of a player, but he’s had too many serious injuries over the past couple of years. The Skins need to see if he can stay healthy in 2013 before signing him to lucrative extension.
