Report: Punter Pat McAfee will play this season under the franchise tag

With the deadline to extend players who have been franchised being Monday, we have been watching for reports for players who will get long-term deals. Looks like Indianapolis Colts’ punter Pat McAfee will not be one of those players.

Mike Chappell of the Indianapolis Star reports that McAfee will play out the season under the $2.977 million franchise tag which will see him become a free agent again at the end of the season.

The downside to his plan would be obvious and it’s the reason why players hold out pending a long-term deal with guaranteed money. If McAfee goes down with an injury, the Colts will have no obligation (or desire) to sign him to a longer deal.

This morning there was reports of Broncos’ Ryan Clady being offered more money by the team in hopes of reaching a long term deal. If Clady accepts, it would seem that he would be the only player who was tagged with the franchise designation to sign a long-term deal.
