According to Mike Triplett of the New Orleans Times-Picayune, the Saints and quarterback Drew Brees should be able to get a deal done by 4pm est next Monday, since that’s the deadline before he’d be forced to play under the franchise tag in 2012.
There’s belief that both sides will keep going back and forth over the details right up until the last-minute.
Brees is expected to sign a contract that will pay him $19.2 to $20 million per year, which would make him the highest paid player in NFL history.
The Saints have already offered Brees the richest contract in NFL history, since it would pay him more than the $19.2 million that Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning is set to earn this year.
It looks like Brees and his agent Tom Condon will keep doing what they can to get him $20 million per year, as well as possibly more guaranteed money and more money with the first three years of the deal.
Brees is looking very selfish right now, but this will likely be his last NFL contract and he’s trying to get what he can now, after surpassing his previous contracts.Powered by Sidelines
