Report: “Close call” on whether the Redskins will tag Brian Orakpo

According to The Washington Post,  the Redskins are undecided on whether they’re going to use the franchise tag on linebacker Brian Orakpo.

Washington Redskins officials were in final deliberations this weekend over what was described as a difficult decision about whether to devote the financial resources necessary to retain outside linebacker Brian Orakpo.

According to several people familiar with the situation, the Redskins like Orakpo as a player and ideally would prefer to keep him. But there have been differing views within the organization, according to those sources, about the wisdom of either using the franchise player tag or pursing an expensive long-term contract with Orakpo when that money and salary cap space instead could be used to address other needs.

“I think there’s a lot of back and forth on it,” said one person with knowledge of the team’s deliberations.  “I don’t think it’s clear cut.”

I don’t think you just let star players like Orakpo walk.  I would tag him in hopes of signing him to a long-term deal.

I see so many articles with the press saying we should retain Rak. I would assume that you see the cap. There is numerous holes to fill on this team. When a team isn’t successful, why tie up that kind of money in one guy? Its not like he helped us win games last year…….ten million a season is too much……..and his agent isn’t gonna budge. Rak has spent numerous games on IR. I would sign him to incentives based deal and apparently, he isn’t agreeing to those type of deals. So at this point, I would tag and trade him, or tag him where we can match the offer……..if he goes, he goes…….its smarter to spend wisely. We have throw top dollar at good players for years. How has that worked out again?
