Report: 49ers might have to choose between Harbaugh and Baalke

jim harbaughAccording to Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports,  there have been some rumblings at the NFL Scouting Combine that things are so bad between the 49ers and Jim Harbaugh that they might have to choose between him and general manager Trent Baalke.
Things are not getting better behind the scenes for the San Francisco 49ers. There was a persistent rumble throughout the combine about the extent of the rift between coach Jim Harbaugh and the team’s front office. It doesn’t seem like it will go away, and there is increasing buzz that the team might have to decide between Harbaugh or GM Trent Baalke.
It doesn’t help that both Baalke and Harbaugh are barely talking to one another.

The men are barely speaking, I’m told, and almost all communication is through email. Harbaugh also has a strained relationship with team president Paraag Marathe, sources said, and he has clashed with many within the organization. It could prove untenable. If anything, the impression I got this week was that the situation there is actually much worse than how it has been portrayed in the media, and helps explain the delay in giving a new deal to the coach, who has two years left on a contract he has outperformed.

At Harbaugh’s last press conference, he stated he would fight to keep his free agents. He was sending a message.
Many of these starters were drafted by Baalke before Harbaugh arrived. The coaching staff like to run the veterans into the ground & will not develop young players.
Case in point, Gore had the most carries in 2013 in his career. He had his lowest average 4.1 in his career. In the playoffs only Gore was used, he averaged just 3.4 yards.
In 2012 the 49ers defense average 17 points a game. In the playoffs the defense gave up over 30 points in the playoffs & SB. 49ers players had the most snaps in the NFL in 2012. After the SB loss we discovered many of the defensive players were playing injured.

Seriously, York, the first time you are faced with any adversity and you allow this to happen – and to get out of control! When Marathe was promoted to the top position I was concerned that something bad was going to happen: professional sports teams need people who know something about the sport to lead them. Marathe is just a bean counter who knows NOTHING about football, Jed York is where he is because of genetics, etc., etc. Baalke has a fair-to-good record, but GMs are a dime a dozen (or else Singletary would have succeeded). Harbaugh may be a prima donna – so what! He knows football and has the wins to prove it. What has Marathe done for the team? For that matter, what has York done for the football side of things. It’s football, gentlemen, the economics of the league are so huge that they take care of themselves….listen to the football people not the bean counters….you make your billions with or without the front office – give us football 16 weeks a year and you can keep the money.
