Packers restructure Mason Crosby’s contract

According to Brian McIntyre of Yahoo! Sports,  the Green Bay Packers have restructured the contract of kicker Mason Crosby.

Crosby had been scheduled to earn $2.4 million in base salary during the 2013 season. Under the restructured contract, Crosby will earn $800,000 in base salary, which will be fully guaranteed if he’s on the team’s roster on Saturday, Sept. 7. Crosby can make up the $1.6 million difference via roster bonuses throughout the season and through performance incentives.

The remaining two years of Crosby’s contract were not changed.

Crosby really struggled last season and many people thought he would be gone by now, but he was able to hold onto his job this preseason.

Now, he’s let the $$PACKERS$$ re-do his contract??
Under the restructured contract, Crosby will earn $800,000 in base salary, which will be fully guaranteed.
Could somebody explain how an athlete (who probably has an agent / attorney advising hiim) how Crosby would give up $2.4 M for $8 K?
Was the scheduled 2.4M not guaranteed or what?
    I am puzzled.
