According to Chiefs interim head coach Romeo Crennel, if quarterback Kyle Orton keeps winning games the way he did this past Sunday against the Packers, he just might be the starter in Kansas City next season.
“If we win these next two games with him (Orton), and he continues to play the way he did today, then you might have to say that,” Crennel said, after answering a wuesiton about Orton possibly being the starter in 2012. “That’s what happens in football: You see what kind of production a player has, and then you make a determination of whether you think that production will continue and if you want that type of player on your team.
“If he continues to do what he did today, I would say yes.”
Chiefs fullback Le’Ron McClain was very impressed by Orton’s performance on Sunday.
“Nothing against (Palko) or (Cassel), man, just — Kyle is a new beast out there with us,” fullback McClain said. “He ran the whole game on the sideline, coming to us on certain plays, telling us in the huddle — boom, boom, ‘Just get open for me right here.’ ”
If Orton ends up being the Chiefs starter next season, that would leave Cassel on the bench, since he won’t be a free agent until 2015. Unless of course the Chiefs decide to try and trade him. But I’m not sure what they’d get in return for him.
