According to Mark Maske of the Washington Post, Washington Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan indicated at this week’s NFL owners meetings that whether they draft Andrew Luck or Robert Griffin III, they will have a shot at starting right away. It will depend on what kind of progress he makes in the offseason.
“You put him in there when you feel like he’s ready to go,” Shanahan said.
Shanahan would be fine with drafting either Luck or Griffin III, since they don’t know who the Indianapolis Colts will take with the first overall pick.
“When you make a move to the second pick in the draft, you’ve got to feel comfortable with both guys,” Shanahan said.
Whoever, they acquire with the second overall pick, Shanahan believes he’ll be a franchise quarterback for a long time.
“You get someone you feel like can be a franchise quarterback for years to come, that doesn’t happen very often. . . . To have that guy — they’re hard to find,” Shanahan said.
If Luck or RG3 isn’t ready to start right away, Shanahan would be fine with having veteran Rex Grossman start out the season, since he knows it’s not beneficial to rush a rookie.
“You don’t want to put him in there before he’s ready,” Shanahan said Wednesday.
