Mike Shanahan looking for his veterans to step up

Washington Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan is looking for help from his veteran leaders now that his team has a 3-5 record despite the fact that they’ve been a very competitive team this season.

“This is where normally football teams are taken over by their veterans,” Shanahan said, regarding a question about his defense, via The Washington Post. “You can go one direction or the other. You expect these guys to play at a higher level, even with some inexperienced guys. You expect them to get the most out of these other players that may not have played at the highest level they can. It’€™s either step up or shut up. And this is where you’ve got to get it done.”

I’m not sure if the veterans the Redskins have are going to be able to turn things around on defense.  DeAngelo Hall has been a liability in coverage for a long time and safety Madieu Williams is an average player.  The loss of Brian Orakpo and Adam Carriker will also continue to hurt them.

At the end of the day, the Redskins are what they are.
