The New York Jets placed quarterback Mark Sanchez on temporary injured-reserve earlier today. Even though Geno Smith will now have 8 weeks to cement himself as the starter, Sanchez isn’t giving up on the starting job.
According the ESPNNewYork.com, the former first-round pick expects to start when he returns from his shoulder injury.
I expect to play, that’s just the way I am,” Sanchez said, via Rich Cimini of ESPNNewYork.com. “I’m expecting to be the starter, I always have been.
On some level, it’s fair to speculate whether Sanchez is just echoing what the Jets have told him. If the Jets wanted to avoid future drama, they could of simply just placed him on normal injured-reserve. That would of effectively ended Sanchez’s season but also put a stop to the quarterback controversy that many thought would of been over half way through the preseason.
