Going into training camp, the San Diego Chargers have been using cornerback Marcus Gilchrist to fill in at strong safety while Brandon Taylor rehabs a torn ACL. According to his defensive coordinator, John Pagano, Gilchrist has been doing much better than just filling in.
On an interview with Darren Smith on the Mighty 1090, Pagano says Gilchrist’s “transformation to safety has been outstanding. He’s going to fit into what we’re trying to do”
The team hasn’t had a solid strong safety since Rodney Harrison departed for New England. The Chargers drafted LSU’s Taylor in last year’s draft but he ultimately tore his ACL towards the end of his rookie season in his first start in a game against the New York Jets.
