The Detroit Lions have made it clear that they will let running back Kevin Smith hit the free agent market.
Since Smith won’t be coming back, the Lions will need another back to spell Jahvid Best. One possable fit for the Lions might be former Washington Redskins running back Clinton Portis.
If Portis is limited to third downs he can help out tremendously. He’s one of the best pass blocking running backs in the NFL and could add a nice dynamic to the Lions offense.
But the only problem is making sure you don’t over work Portis. He doesn’t have much left in him after playing for former head coach Joe Gibbs, who’s smash mouth style of offense ran him into the ground.
