On Thursday, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Alex Smith was asked why their passing offense was ranked 29th in the league in 2011.
“I could absolutely care less on yards per game,” Smith said. “I think that is a totally overblown stat because if you’re losing games in the second half, guess what, you’re like the Carolina Panthers and you’re going no-huddle the entire second half. Yeah, Cam Newton threw for a lot of 300-yard games. That’s great. You’re not winning, though.”
Newton’s teammate Jon Beason didn’t like the comments he heard from Smith so he decided to go on Twitter and rip Smith.
Alex smith, don’t hate on Cam Bc your stats would’ve gotten u cut if Peyton decided to come 2 San Fran.Truth b told..That’s after a 13-3 yr.

I do agree with Smith’s point, which is that it’s all about winning and not stats. But he probably shouldn’t have allowed his emotions to get the best of him in that situation.

i agree with smith, all u hear about is cam u cant win a game with one man and a quaterback that is overrated
You hear about Cam as much as you do because there is much to say about him. Overrated? I don’t think so. If anything, he’s underrated. He was given a snow ball’s chance in hell to be successful in his rookie season at Carolina. He went out and shattered the record books and over performed. Know what you’re talking about and talk about what you know.
