In the press release where the Denver Broncos announced the suspensions of team executives Matt Russell and Tom Heckert for their DUI arrests, vice president of football operations John Elway calls their behavior unacceptable and inexcusable.
“When I was named to this position two years ago, I spoke of the role this organization has in the community,” Elway said in the release. “We all have an individual responsibility to represent this team in the appropriate manner at all times. It’s particularly disappointing that two members of my staff acted so irresponsibly. Simply put, it’s unacceptable and inexcusable.”
A revelation in the press release was the fact that the league won’t be seeking further discipline against the two executives. Albert Breer of the NFL Network points out the fact that Heckert and Russell avoiding further punishment doesn’t mean the team will avoid punishment under the league’s salary remittance policy that punishes a team for repeated DUI arrests.
