With 2:15 left in Sunday’s NFC Championship game, New York Giants running back Ahmad Bradshaw was stopped by three 49ers defenders as he ran the ball up field and started to get pushed back as he remained standing. As they were pushing him back they stripped the football, but the referee ruled that Bradshaw was down due to forward progress.
It was obvious that 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh didn’t agree with the call.
“This one I did not agree with, felt like it was a fumble, felt like it was analogous to the Tuck Rule,” Harbaugh said on Monday.
“In my opinion, that was a fumble,” Harbaugh said. “I’m sure the league will defend it and the officials will defend it. But to me the play was continuing, there was struggling going on by Bradshaw. So (I) feel like that was a fumble.”
I completely disagree with Harbaugh, as soon as Bradshaw went backward, the 49ers defender stripped the ball. Forward progress is ruled as soon as a player begins to fall back, which is exactly what happened.
