New York Jets wide receiver Santonio Holmes was benched during Sunday’s season ending loss to the Dolphins, after he was arguing with a teammate in the Jets offensive huddle in the fourth quarter.
According to players on the Jets, Holmes was moping around the field throughout the game, and wasn’t listening to quarterback Mark Sanchez.
“Let me just say that there were guys in the huddle that were unhappy with Tone’s demeanor,” saod Ladanian Tomlinson. “And when you have a group of guys who are fighting their butts off, and one guy who – for whatever reason, his demeanor isn’t with ‘em – you’ll have guys try to say something to him, just pretty much tell him how they feel. That’s what you got today.”
“The worst thing that can happen, the worst thing, is when your teammates start to question your passion for the game. That’s the worst thing. And I think in that huddle, that’s what you saw. When guys looked in his eyes, and he didn’t have that fire in his eyes, guys were turned off about that … The demeanor is, ‘I quit,’ or whatever it may be.”
A Jets player that asked to remain nameless, said that this wasn’t the first game Holmes has acted like this.
“He quit,” the player said. “It’s happened for the past two to three weeks. It’s happened all season.”
When the Jets season started to fizzling out over the past few weeks, it was clear that this team was starting to fall apart at the seems and it’s clear that Holmes was one of the guys that sparked the collapse.
It’s sad that when a team pays a guy like Holmes big money to be there number one receiver, he can’t even give everything he has to help his team.
