Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones made an appearance on 105.3 The Fan in Dallas with Shan and RJ. He was asked if he’d consider bringing in former Colts vice chairman Bill Polian.
Jones said that the job of general manager is his and it’s what has worked out the best for the Cowboys organization.
“The thing you’ve got to realize is that when you have an owner that is full time as the owner, then you create a situation where you have as much turnover at GM as you do at coaching level,” Jones said. “And I think that just deters from the mix.”
Jones claimed that he’s been doing things the same way since 1989 when he bought the team and he understands why questions are raised about his job as GM when the Cowboys don’t win.
“The facts are that I’ve spent 22 years doing this exactly the same way,” Jones said. “I’ve made a lot of changes from year to year as time goes along. “I know that when we do not have the kind of success, when we don’t have expectations lived up to, the one that should get the most heat is the one that ultimately makes the decisions, period, with the Dallas Cowboys. And that’s me.”
Even though Jones has made changes over the years, maybe the problem is that he hasn’t made the right changes. This could also be the reason the Cowboys can’t seem to get over the hump and make a run at a Super Bowl title.

Yeah, yeah, yeah…. same old BS from the jerk with the oversized, undeserved ego! I get so tired of the same old “I’m the best for the team”crap that he continues to spew. He will NEVER admit that he’s THE NUMBER ONE PROBLEM facing the Cowboy’s future success! He had 2 excellent head coaches and he fired them both because he couldn’t stand having someone that knew much more about professional football than he did. The first was Tom Landry and the 2nd was Jimmie Johnson. Both had Super Bowl winners and Jones couldn’t let their success shine ove his own! He’ll only hire ‘Yes’ men as head coaches now and that’s the problem! No real HC would accept the job because Jones sticks his ugly nose into everything and the HC has no authority. If Jones won’t step down and let the HC & GM run things, he should sell the team and let a real owner take over. I’m all for boycotting the Cowboys’ and Jones’ overblown stadium until he sells out! Go, Jerry Jones! Go far, Jerry Jones! Go far away, Jerry Jones! Go back to Arkansas, Jerry Jones! You are not wanted here as long as you continue to bring down our beloved Cowboys! You have proven that you are not the football genius you think you are! If other fans would refuse to buy tickets to the games and any Cowboys’ merchandise until he leaves or sells, maybe we can make overinflated ego Jones understand we don’t want him ruining the Cowboys’ any longer! I’m fed up with his BS. If he were as smart as he thinks he is, he would have not fired Wade Phillips but only demoted him to Defensive Co-ordinator! Phiilps has taken the Texans from last place in defense to 1st place in his first year there. Doesn’t that show Phillips is a great defensive co-ordinator? What did Rob Ryan do for the Cowboys? Nothing! They can’t stop a good High School team! And who did Jones hire as Head Coach? An ex-QB that had NEVER been a HC before and blows the biggest lead in the 4th quarter that the Cowboys have ever lost! And he ices his own kicker to lose another game. And he can’t manage the clock to lose another game! Your hand picked HC is a joke! Which also proves you are a lousy GM! Come on, all Cowboys’ fans! Let’s boycott all games and merchandice until Jones’ leaves!
I agree with most of what Paladin said.
I have been a Cowboys fan since 1977 and I’ve seen enough.
The way they let Tom L. go and the players Jones hire are seconds for the most part.
He needs to stay off the field and lock himself in the owners box.
It just proves money doesn’t buy everything.
As far as the head coach goes I like Garrett.
Jones needs to up the secondary get a good back up quarter-back and quit bringing in other teams troubles…
The pride of the Cowboys and it’s fans are SHOT and JONES is the blame for it.
WOW. THAT WAS PERFECT!
Thanks to you both, Scott & Tedd, for your comments and support. As for Jason Garrett, maybe I am being too harsh on him. He may become a great HC in a few years, after he gets more experience. In the meantime, he may have as overblown an ego as Jerry Jones. For instance, his previous job was as offensive co-ordinator for the Cowboys’, a job he still holds today. I think that is an impossible task since he can’t be concerned with the next play to call for the offense, and try to manage the clock as the HC at the same time. That was evident when time ran out on the play clock, the Cowboys’ were penalized for delay of game, pushed back 5 yards and could no longer go for 4th & 1, thereby losing another game. Garrett should give up the OC job and concentrate on the HC job, at least until he has more experience and can handle both jobs. In the meantime, he cost the Cowboys a possible win by trying to do both jobs.
I’ve been a Cowboys fan since inception in 1960. I was born & raised in Dallas so they’re the only team I’ve ever been a fan of. But, like a few other fans mentioned on other Cowboy sites, I’m also considering a switch to the Texans, since I live in Houston now and because I’m fed up with Jerry Jones, his over-inflated ego, his refusal to step down as GM and his big mouth! He isn’t aware that the GM is responsible for finding talented players and signing them. He wouldn’t know a talented player if one kicked his rear a few times. Jones thinks writing a bigger check will make a player into a superstar! DeMarcus Ware is the best player on the team, in my opinion, and our secondary would have trouble defending most college teams. Another example of Jones’ poor decison making abilities is his pick of Quincy Jones in the 2nd round. Everybody else had him as a 6th round pick, at best. It turned out that everybody else was right! So Jones wasted a 2nd round pick. Did Jerry Jones pick him in the 2nd round just because of his last name? Jones has to got to go and I hope all Cowboys’ fans take my suggested boycott seriously! Money is all Jones’ understands so let’e hit him in the pocketbook! America’s team! Ha! Not any more!
Yea, the plays look like they’re from 1989 too. Brees, Rogers and Brady make it rain on the field and they win Superbowls. The Cowboys move up the field 8 to 15 yards at a time. That shouldn’t be too hard for any defensive coordinator to figure out. The Cowboys need to start throwing the ball DEEP down the field and get the opposing defense on their heels early, opening up the run threat. The offensive line sucks and Doug Free needs to move back to his original position. Pick up a RB to use in passing plays, kinda like Darren Sproles. Pass first, run second and stop worrying about the balance. The game is evolving and Jerry Jones is stuck in the 90′s. Garrett is okay, but too calm, cool and collected to fire up his players or even show any sense of urgency…. and the team plays in his image.
