New York Giants secondary coach/safeties coach Dave Merritt told Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News a story of when he spoke with Dallas Cowboys tight end Jason Witten at the Pro Bowl a couple of years ago.
Merritt said that Witten told him that the Cowboys don’t even bother throwing the ball in safety Kenny Phillips’ direction.
“Witten told me when I went to the Pro Bowl two years ago when Antrel invited me, Witten said, when 21’s in the post, we don’t even throw anything deep because we know he can go and get it.” Merritt said, ‘But if I see anybody else back there, (Tony) Romo knows, we’re going deep.’
“That’s comforting for me to hear.”
Even though Phillips under went microfracture surgery on his knee in 2009, he’s been one of the most underrated safety’s in the NFL. He possesses excellent sideline to sideline speed and can come up and play the run as well.
