New York Giants owner John Mara was a guest on 1050 ESPN Radio in New York and confirmed that they offered Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Steve Smith a deal “that would’ve made him one of the highest paid receivers in the league.”
The deal was offered to Smith last year, but his agent ended up turning it down.
Mara also confirmed that at that time, Smith’s agent promised to allow the Giants match any offer.
My guess is that the Giants offered Smith a “big” contract before he injured his knee last season. We’re currently working on getting some clarification on that. Then Smith and his agent rejected the offer in anticipation that he could command a larger deal after another productive season. Little did they know that he would injure his knee and need microfracture surgery.
