The New York Giants had the 19th overall pick in the first round of last nights NFL draft. Most analysis predicted them to take an offensive lineman or possibly running back Mark Ingram. No one had thought they would end up with arguably the second best cornerback in the draft with Prince Amukamara.
Amukamara was projected to possibly go in the top ten, or at the latest 13th overall to the Dettoit Lions. It seems that the main cause for Amukamara’s slide was due to the Tennessee Titans taking quarterback Jake Locker. Because of Locker going to the Titans it cuase defensive tackle Nick Fairley to fall to the Lions at the 13th pick. I believe if Fairley wasn’t available, the Lions would have taken Amukamara.
It’s obvious the Giants didn’t intend on taking a cornerback in the first round. But when a top ten talent falls in your lap, you have to take him. In the first round its very important to take value over need because more then likely value will end up working out more often then the player that is picked based on need.
Marc Ross the Giants Director of College Scouting was simply shockedthat Amukamara was available.
“It was a shock,” Ross said. “I know we come in and say we take the best player and we’re surprised, but this one truly was a shock. Because you go through scenarios leading up to the draft where you have realistic scenarios, somewhat unrealistic scenarios and this one was just completely out of left field. We never thought this kid would still be on the board at 19.”
Now the Giants might have the deepest set of corners in the NFL with Corey Webster, Terrell Thomas, Aaron Ross, and Prince Amukamara.
