Former Giants safety Chad Jones taken in the 9th round of the MLB draft

According to the New Orleans Times-Picayune, former Giants safety Chad Jones was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in the 9th round of the MLB draft this past week.

“I had to keep my phone on the charger because I had my eyes on MLB.com all day,” Jones said with a laugh. “It was a blessing to see my name go across that screen. It was a great feeling.

“I was pretty confident a team would take a shot at me, but it came a little earlier than I expected. But I knew my times were there and the things I did at the tryout were pretty good for having been out of the game so long. It’s a blessing to be able to move forward with my career.”

Jones, the 285th player selected overall, nearly lost his leg in an horrific single-car accident in May of 2010, weeks after being picked by the New York Giants as a defensive back in the third round of the NFL Draft. Since that time he has undergone extensive rehabilitation for the severely broken leg, which also had injuries to the muscle, nerves and the vascular system. He was eventually released by the Giants.

Jones did everything he could to try and salvage his NFL career, but it made sense at the end of the day for him to change his focus and work on becoming a pro baseball player.  I believe the leg injury he suffered was too serious for him to have an NFL career.  He shouldn’t have a problem playing baseball.
