Texas A&M QB Johnny Manziel is a dynamic playmaker that have many scratching their heads as to whether or not he will be a successful QB. Drew Brees seems believes that for Manziel the transition will be a smooth one, even going as far as to compare him to Russell Wilson.
“He’s got all the playmaking ability to be a great player. [There are] guys like [Manziel] in this league. Russell Wilson and his ability to run the football and extend plays outside the pocket and throw the ball down the field. Intermediate [routes], I mean he can do it all.”
Brees went on to say that he believes that Manziel’s skills aren’t the only reason that the A&M quarterback will have success at the next level.
“I think the physical qualities are not nearly as important as the psychological qualities of playing the quarterback position,” Brees said. “Certainly you have to have some level of throwing ability and fundamentals and that kind of thing. But speed, height, arm strength … those things are way overrated when playing the quarterback position.”
“You have to instill confidence in the guys you’re playing with so they’ll follow you and play for you so you can get the best out of them,” Brees said. “It’s all about leadership.”-BlackSportsOnline.com
Manziel is one of the most polarizing prospects in this years draft. My opinion is that there are simply too many holes in his game to invest a top pick in. His size, arm strength and off the field issues concern me. Can he lead men? Can he develop as a passer? Is his size going to be an issue or will he be able to overcome it? There are so many questions that need to be answered with Manziel and there are plenty of QBs with similar upside that have fewer questions.
