As DeSean Jackson continues to wait for the Philadelphia Eagles to open up their wallet and pay him the big money he’s looking for, Ashley Fox of ESPN brought up some great points in an article she recently wrote. She does a great job explaining he likely won’t get paid anytime soon.
Just to give you some insight on Ashley Fox, she worked for the Philadelphia Enquirer for 11 years before she came to ESPN this year. So I would think she has a good feel for the Eagles and how they do business, as well as how they’re feeling when it comes to giving Jackson a big contract extension.
I strongly encourage everyone to read the article, but the first point she brings up is the fact that the Eagles aren’t crazy about the boned headed antics on the field that seems to come along with Jackson week in and week out. For example, the taunting penalty against the Giants that wiped out a 50 yard pass play that would have been a crushing blow to the Giants defense. Instead of making a play and moving on, he had to throw the football at Giants defensive coordinator Perry Fewell? Grow up, your’re in the NFL.
Another thing that the Eagles are likely wary of, is just how fragile Jackson is since he’s only listed at 5 feet 10 inches tall and 175 pounds, which is likely exaggerated a bit. As an organization, do you really think the Eagles want to pay Jackson big money when he could be a hit away from being done as an NFL player?
I’m well aware that every NFL player runs the risk of suffering a career ending injury on any given play. But when you’re built like a leaf, it wouldn’t take a tremendous hit to put Jackson out for the count.
The Eagles will likely end up placing the franchise tag on Jackson for the 2012 season, but their patience might be running out with him. A clear example of this is when he was suspended for the Eagles week ten game against the Cardinals for missing a meeting.
If I was the Eagles, I would franchise him and trade him away next season if they don’t plan on keeping him long term.
