Every April (May after 2013) NFL teams’ hard work and preparation culminate with the NFL draft. Every team hopes to snag franchise talents and just maybe select a Rookie of the Year level of talent. This is my defensive rookie of the year prediction.
My preseason prediction for Defensive Rookie of the Year is Browns Rookie OLB Barkevious Mingo. Mingo is slated to begin the season as a backup but I don’t see that hindering him (remember Russell Wilson was slated as a backup at this time last year too)and I expect him to take over a starting spot by the start of the regular season. At LSU he displayed great strength for a man of his size, at times driving offensive lineman backward. He is a phenomenal athlete with great burst off the snap and bend when getting around blocks, two hallmarks of effective pass rushers. Mingo may not immediately be a prolific force in the running game but I expect him to put up impressive sack totals his rookie season which is an attribute many voters look for in Rookie of the Year Selections.
