Former Minnesota Vikings wide receiver and current ESPN analyst Cris Carter admitted on Hill and Schlereth on ESPN Radio that he participated in bounties during his NFL career.
“I’m guilty of it,” Carter said. “It’s the first time I’ve ever admitted it. But I put a bounty on guys before. I put bounties on guys. And the guys tried to take me out, a guy tried to take a cheap shot on me, I put a bounty on him, right now.”
Schlereth then asked, “A money bounty?”
“Absolutely,” Carter replied.
“Protect me. . . . Protect me from him. . . . Especially if he’s playing a different position where I can’t protect myself,” Carter said. “I’d tell one of them guards, ‘Hey man, this dude is after me, man. Bill Romanowski.’ He told me he’s gonna me out before the game, in warm ups. No problem. ‘I’m gonna end your career, Carter.’ No problem. I put a little change on his head before the game. Protect myself, protect my family. That’s the league that I grew up in.”
Carter was asked if he was the only one to participate in bounties and he replied, “Heck no!”
Carter even admitted that he doesn’t have any regrets.
“Matter of fact, if I see a couple of them dudes that was trying to cheap shot me walking through ESPN, I’d put a bounty on them right now.”
I can’t say I’m surprised at all.

If Carter had any chance of getting into the HOF he can kiss it goodbye now….what an idiot.
even if he did do that- why would you tell the world that you were an evil man and that you are still evil !! (But vote me into the HALL OF FAME). He just join the PETE ROSES, Mark McGuire’s, Barry Bonds as guys who will never be inducted. (hopefully they saved their money)
HELLO IS THIS FOOTBALL WE ARE TALKING ABOUT??? i thought for a second it was GOLF a non contact sport…since we were all kids we played football with the intention of playing hard, hitting hard, being the hardest hitter, knocking someone on they’re ***…cuz if you werent you were a LITTLE *****! I remember in high school coaches telling me take him out just to pump you up. now these guys in the NFL are getting paid millions to get hit hard, so i do see why we really shine a spotlight on teams like the saints who im sure arent the only one to put bounties out. (they just got caught lol) and concussions have broken bones have been occuring since dinosaur days man. cant blame the man that is just trying to protect himself by getting insurance policies from his blockers.
Should we lie to get a trophy? Football is a violent sport, played by men who will hurt you everyday and you throw in extra money for an extra painfull hit. Come on if you feel bounties are wrong and should be disposed of, either outlaw football or quit watching.
Not that it will matter, but I believe Carter should be in the HOF. The bounty thing is bull and should not be tolerated, but Carter was a top WR during his days.
Ive watched this guy on espn and he seems to be one those guys that no matter whats going on in nfl hes already done it.my guess to keep his job come on chris if romo wanted you out you would have been out.
Oh shall I rise to the top of the mountain? This bounty business is such a joke, since when has anyone been above it? The only problem with the whole situation is that the news media will not leave it alone. If I had to bet most of the NFL Hall of Famers played within the same parameters. Football, Hockey, whatever sports are businesses like it or not and if bounties give your team/teams an advantage then go for it. Be warned though if you try to take out our Best Players then be prepared to lose yours.
This activity will someday end in a criminal conviction in football or baseball.
Would you enjoy a novel that imagines what would happen to a MLB rookie pitcher who throws a fatal bean ball at the behest of his manager? If so, A PITCH FOR JUSTICE an e-book examines the national debate that rages about the inherent risks of baseball and the laws of society when a criminal investigation and prosecution for homicide ensues. This is also quite different than a coach putting a bounty on someone. Cris was threatened and he “threatened” back. I am not saying that it is okay, but you have to know everyone does things like that. Someone threatens my teammate I am going after them bounty or no bounty, the bounty Cris offered just made it worth “more” for his teammates…
This whole thing is stupid and needs to go away. If someone hurts another player for whatever reason there should be sanctions in place so it is dealt with and others think twice before doing it. If it is a choice then something should be done to help make the “correct” choice. However, if it is a “part” of being on a team then that is wrong and needs to be dealt with
GOOD MAN
He didn’t have to admit this he did though cut the man a break!
Are there any men left in this world?! This is football people!!! If you want to play or watch something without hard hits and men being men then go watch golf. This is the sport for real men!!! All I hear about is how bounties are so horrible because you have players trying to aggressively take out other players. That’s what they are trying to do anyways. If you don’t think the d-line is trying to get to and injure offensive players you’re an idiot. They don’t need money on it to be motivated to do that. They want to do that anyways. They aren’t playing tennis, they are playing football!!!
My father was a fullback at the university of Louisville. Tried out for a football team in chicago. Won starting spot and was doing well. A defensive lineman yelled over the line that he was going to break his leg. Next play my father was laying on the ground with his leg bent over his head, with a compound break of his femur. The year was 1931.
***NEWSFLASH***
Football is a violent game played by tough guys. Everyone that has ever played, knows exactly what they are in for when they step on the field.
Now that it is time for them to pay up for all those years of making crazy money, the ones who managed thier finances badly are crying foul and want another payday.
A once great game will never be the same and it is a shame.
The days of great football players like Dick Butkus are gone forever.
Okay, Ben, Aaron and Dave i agree with all of yall,
People are not understanding that player have incentative in there contact so what do you call that. if the player do not met those incentative they get cut, for the one’s that exceed those get bonus, so what do you call that.
Bad Grammar?
Sean, I’m sorry to tell you this……but your an idiot. The “incentive” in your contract is a way to get you to perform above and beyond at your specific position and get a bonus. For example a defensive end may have an incentive that pays him an extra 100,000 if he records 18 sacks. What the adults are debating abiut this issue is actually paying players outside of their contract to injure a player or players to the point of carting them off the field. Everyone here will agree football is a violent game, but the idea of paying a defensive player $10,000 in the locker room after the game because the qb was knocked unconcious is sickening. somewhere along the way these idiots forgot that they are getting payed to play a GAME and the thought of someone trying to PURPOSEFULLY injure an opponent to the point that they may not be able to fufill their job or play with their kids is disgusting. The risks these guys take by suiting up and playing are enough, but to add the threat of some idiot looking for extra cash and a willingness to injure or maim is crazy.
Not, Tim,
due to the facts over the years and how football has been played. Let talk talk about when Lavar ended Troy Aikman career with his hit do you think for one second Lavar got pay outside contact, Hell Yeah. Or when LT was playing, take you back to 50′s, 60′s and 70′s these player did not get pay as much as these player’s now days and alot of these QB are soft. So when Kurt and Brent talk about the hits they took they should have been retired two or three ago. Instead they kept playing, incentive are a legal way to said bounty.
I cannot speak to the softness of QB’s, I feel they are as soft as WR’s. But that’s not what were talking about. I say again incase you missed it the first time: Incentives in your contract are not bounties. Incentives are rewards written in your contract for certain accomplishments (leading the league in tackles, making the Pro-Bowl, or scoring the most rushing TD’s). Do you realize how retarded you sound trying to get people to believe that incentives and bounties are the same thing?!? So you’re saying that an owner of a football team is idiotic enough to put in a players contract that he’ll receive XX amount of dollars for every WR that is carted off the field due to a hit he put on them!!! Because the only place any of us will find incentives…..IS IN THE CONTRACT!! What we’re talking about is the equivalent of me paying a dude to attack you at your office. There is no difference! To further clarify, if LaVar was paid OUTSIDE of his contract for that hit then yes he’s part of the problem. However most of us that are in our right mind know that on that particular play LaVar was doing his job as was Troy and both were accepting of the fact that on every play there are risks of injury. It just so happened that that turned out to be Troy’s 3rd concussion. And by the way just because Brett should have retired 15 seasons ago, it doesn’t mean that he or Kurt can’t talk about the hits they took. I think any player who plays QB in the NFL has earned a right to talk about hits just as much as a DE or a CB.
Sounds like Cris Carter just said “NO THANKS” to the Hall of Fame, because he’ll damn sure never get there now after this little confession.
