According to Daniel Brown of the San Jose Mercury News, Colin Kaepernick is currently in the lead to be the 49ers back up quarterback going into the regular season.

“Colin Kaepernick, who sprinted for a 78-yard touchdown in the exhibition opener, has taken the lead in the race for the 49ers backup quarterback job.

“Coach Jim Harbaugh said Tuesday that the second-year player from Nevada has the edge over competitors Josh Johnson and Scott Tolzien heading into the second exhibition game, against the host Houston Texans on Saturday,” wrote Brown

“Nothing is set in stone in that regard, but there has been some emergence,” Harbaugh said.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Kaepernick is fighting for the 49ers’ starting quarterback job within the next year or two.
