Carolina Panthers rookie quarterback Cam Newton knows if he’s going to be successful this season he’s going to need wide receiver Steve Smith to remain in Carolina. That’s why Newton is trying to say the right things in order to persuade Smith’s decision on whether he should leave the Panthers or not. Newton told a kid at a youth camp that he wanted to play for the Panthers so he could be the top pick and have a great receiver to throw to. When Newton was asked whether his comments were to persuade Smith’s decision he said, “Hopefully, he got the message.”
Smith is under contract, but he can end up holding out until the Panthers trade or release him. Or he can end up retiring like the Bengals’ Carson Palmer plans on doing.
