Washington Redskins linebacker Brian Orakpo wouldn’t mind winning the NFL’s comeback player of the year award this coming season. He would actually like to share it with quarterback Robert Griffin III.
“If we can both get Comeback Player of the Year honors, that would be remarkable, that would mean we did something special as a team,” Orakpo told USA TODAY Sports after Thursday’s practice. “Me and Griff worked extremely hard to not let our fans and this team down, because we know how much they rely on both of us.
“If we come back at full strength like I know we both will, we’re going to be a team to be reckoned with.”
Orakpo is also striving to become the 2013 defensive player of the year.
“Defensive Player of the Year is a goal of mine,” Orakpo said. “I worked extremely hard this offseason and Defensive Player of the Year is very obtainable.”
RG3 likes what he’s seen from Orakpo.
“Rak’s been great,” Griffin said. “It was tough to see him there on the sideline the whole year. He’s doing a good job coming back from his injury 100%. He’s been firing off the ball.
“He’s explosive. He’s very excited to be back and it tells every day in practice, because he’s out there busting his butt. And I think guys get back not for themselves, they come back because they want to help the team.”
