Denver Broncos safety Brian Dawkins understands that he will likely have to take a pay cut in order for him to remain with the Broncos as one of their starting safeties.
“When I signed this deal I knew what it was,” Dawkins said. “It was basically a two-year deal. I knew after a couple years there was a balloon (mechanism) and we most likely would have to restructure. That’s no big deal to me.”
In his first two seasons with the Broncos, Dawkinsearned about $9 million, which is a fair number for both him and the Broncos at this point in his career.
Dawkins reached a performance escalator in his contract that has roughly tripled his 2011 salary from $2.24 million to $6 million. The Broncos would like to take back a portion of the escalator to go towards other financial needs of the organization.
