President Barack Obama says he would “think about changing” the Washington Redskins’ controversial name.
In an interview with the Associated Press, President Obama says the name offends “a sizable group of people.”
“I don’t know whether our attachment to a particular name should override the real legitimate concerns that people have about these things,” said the President via ABC News.
President Obama doesn’t believe Redskins fans are trying to offend anyone.
“I don’t want to detract from the wonderful Redskins fans that are here. They love their team and rightly so,” he said.
He did say that Native Americans seem to “feel pretty strongly” about offensive mascots and team names throughout the country.
We’ve seen many colleges and high school teams change their mascots and nicknames over the years. I’m not sure what makes the Redskins any different.
