Art Rooney says an extension for Ben Roethlisberger may not come this year

ben roethlisbergerPittsburgh Steelers president Art Rooney told reporters today that an extension for quarterback Ben Roethlisberger may not come this year, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger knows “our intention is we want him here beyond this contact” but an extension might not come this year or even next on a deal that runs through 2015. Traditionally, the Steelers have extended their starting quarterback’s contract when it has two years to run, as it does now. However, Rooney said while they’ve done that on a few occasions it is “not set in stone . . . it’s not something that’s automatic.’’

The good news is that the Steelers have a while before they have to sign Ben to extension.  They could always place the franchise tag on him after the 21015 season and then get a deal done.
