Both Smith and Rogers were signed to one year contracts this past offseason and will hit the free agent market if the 49ers don’t get them locked up with new deals.
Smith isn’t in a rush right now to get a deal done.
“Not in a crazy rush at this point as far as today, tomorrow,” Smith
said. “I think we’ll kind of take our time a little bit. I think I
have ’til March 13 or something, when the contract’s up. But I think
sooner than later, no question, don’t want it to go too long.”
Smith didn’t want to answer whether or not he wants to test the open market.
“I’m not going to get into that,” said Smith.
“I mean, At this point I love it here, love what’s going on, love this
team, the coaching staff, everything about it,” he said. “No question,
would love to stay here.”
When it comes to Rogers, the 49ers are willing to bring him back at the right price and right now he made it clear that he wants it to get done before free agency opens up on March 13th.
I wouldn’t be surprised if the 49ers let Smith walk if team comes in and blows him away with a contract that is clearly worth more then his value.
I believe the 49ers need to make sure they sign Rogers to a long term deal no matter what. He had a break out year and obviously proved his value on the field in a league where good cornerbacks are hard to find.
