In the NFL, you have your casual fans, and then you have those like Mark Lindamood. Lindamood was a superstitious Redskins fan, who refrained from buying an RGIII jersey all last season, in hopes of avoiding any possible jinx he could place on his favorite player during his rookie season.
Lindamood’s wife Bridgette is from Philadelphia, and has always been an avid Eagles fan. Their seven-year old daughter Emily, found herself following in her mother’s direction, by consistently cheering for the Eagles as well. It was always fun and games between Mark and Bridgette, debating every Sunday over who had the more dominant team. All up until the unthinkable happened, on Monday July 1st, when 33-year old Mark Lindamood died of sudden cardiac arrest.
Despite the years passed, when Bridgette and daughter Emily would constantly cheer for the Eagles, Lindamood’s family now find themselves emphatically pulling for the Washington Redskins. Since his death, the Lindamood family has made it known that they will be rooting for Washington every Sunday, as a way to celebrate Mark’s undeniable fandom.
Though Mark Lindamood had never worn a No. 10 jersey all throughout Robert Griffin III’s rookie season, his family was sure to purchase his first and final one – the one in which he was buried in this past Saturday, at his funeral.
In wake of Mark Lindamood’s tragic death, the Washington Post recently reported:
“Mark’s obituary photo shows him in his Brian Orakpo jersey, posing by the Lombardi trophies at Redskins Park. A family friend contacted the Redskins — on July 4, of all days — and a team representative wrote back almost immediately, suggesting they would host the family at a home game this season. Someone else worked on getting the team’s permission to engrave the team logo on Mark’s gravestone.”
The Redskins organization is being extremely supportive of the Lindamood family throughout this difficult time, and it is truly a touching sight to see. To have an entire organization behind a grieving family, shows the NFL is capable of bringing families together.
