I’m sure most NFL teams would fire their coaches for a chance to sign Tony Dungy so it was well worth it for the Lions to give Dungy a call.
According to Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press, when the Lions first reached out to Tony Dungy to ask him questions about Jim Caldwell, Lions brass first asked Dungy if he’d be interested in taking the job.
“He said, ‘I got to start this off, are you interested at all?’” Dungy said. “And I said, ‘No, Martin, I’m not.’ And then we went on. We were able to talk about what we needed to talk about.”-BlackSportsOnline.com
Dungy ended up declining the offer and recommending Jim Caldwell whom the Lions hired.
