Raiders recap versus the Saints

Tonight the Raiders played the Saints. Here are some observations I made.

QB Battle- Matt Flynn started shaky but had a great drive to end the half. Pryor played poorly, not as bad as the stats suggest but if the starter was decided based on one game it would certainly be Flynn.

Greg Olson- OC Greg Olson was certainly a lackluster hire but I was impressed about how he adapted to Flynn throughout the first half

TE battle- There once again was no separation in the TE race. Except for TE David Ausberry who suffered an apparent collar-bone or shoulder injuries. I hate to speculate but it looked bad. He may have injured his way out of the competition. No one stood out, good or bad. The coaching staff would like to see someone step up.

The OL with the absence of Jared Veldheer- The OL was a complete nightmare. Matt Flynn was sacked 5 times in the first half. Hopefully it is just a matter of meshing with a new line but it didn’t look good

Pass Rush- The pass rush looked weak as well. Drew Brees could have made a campfire on a few plays if he wanted  to. Vanilla scheme and lots of starters out on the front 7 but once again it will need to improve.

Rookie DL- Although the pass rush was unimpressive DE David Bass and DT Stacy McGee showed some bright flashes.

Punting battle- Marquette King average 57.3 yards a punt tonight including a booming 61 yarder, Chris Kluwe averaged 49.3 yards with a long of 57. Although King had a touchback and Kluwe held one inside the 20 I’d give the edge to King tonight.

Brice Butler- Continued to look great tonight. Is maturing everyday and made some smart plays including one to get out-of-bounds on a 2 min drive. I could easily see him as a starter this season.
