New York Jets head coach Todd Bowles has seen enough from quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick to already know that he wants to re-sign the veteran journeyman for next season.
“Definitely,” Bowles told the NY Daily News when he was asked if he wants Fitzpatrick back for 2016.
Fitzpatrick is in the final year of a two-year contract he signed with the Houston Texans, so he’ll be a free agent once this season is over.
“We got to work (it out) after the season,” Bowles said regarding Fitzpatrick’s contract situation.
Bowles was asked why he wants Fitzpatrick back for next season.
“You can see it in his play,” Bowles said. “You can see it in his demeanor, his professionalism. Every day, the way he approaches his job. So, it’s somebody you definitely want around.”
Fitzpatrick’s play has always been up and down throughout his career, but he’s had a very good season in 2015. He’s currently throw for 2,866 yards, 22 touchdowns and 11 interceptions this season with a 60 percent completion percentage and a rating of 88.1.
I find it interesting that Fitzpatrick hasn’t been able to stick with one team for very long. He has a quarterback rating of 95.3 with the Texans in 2014, 82.0 with the Titans in 2013 and 83.3 with the Bills in 2012.
Until the Jets find their next franchise quarterback, Fitzpatrick will likely be their starter going forward.
