New York Jets wide receiver Brandon Marshall has shown some leadership during his short time with Gang Green already.
The New York Post told a story where Marshall defended quarterback Geno Smith while he was being heckled at practice.
One day early in training camp, a fan known as “Cuz” was riding Smith mercilessly from the stands, crushing the third-year quarterback after every incompletion. “Cuz” attends training camp every year and is well-known for his white-rimmed sunglasses and his non-stop screaming during practice.
Marshall, new to the Jets, had never seen his act before. When he saw “Cuz” that night at the team hotel, “Cuz” approached him. One witness said it got heated between the two. Marshall, when asked about it Monday, said it was more of a spirited debate.
“I just posed the question,” Marshall recounted. “I said, ‘We want to win, you want to win. Let’s just think about the psyche of an athlete. If an athlete comes out every single day and hears negative stuff, negative stuff, negative stuff when he’s trying to get better, does that help us or does that hurt us? We all want the same thing.’ ”
The next day at practice, “Cuz” was all positive, shouting encouragement to Smith rather than tearing him down.
